I Got Vaccinated for My Mom

Why Our Ad Campaign is About Mothers and Sons
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene recently reported that only 25 percent of Black men between the ages of 18-44 living in NYC are fully vaccinated. Bronx Health REACH’s research and outreach teams talked with young Black and Latino men ages 18-44 and their moms about their COVID-19 vaccine concerns. The reasons many young men refuse to vaccinate doesn’t come down to one thing but, like many other vaccine resisters, the reasons vary. For some it’s their religious beliefs, for others it’s questions about the vaccine safety, mistrust in the U.S. government, and concerns about side effects of the vaccine on fertility and sexual performance.

Many moms, and other beloved female family members like aunts and grandmothers wanted to know how to talk to the young men in their lives about COVID-19 vaccines and their need to safeguard their health. Knowing how strong is the love many young men of color, especially young Black men, have for their moms; and how protective they are of them, a response linking such deeply held affection to choosing to be vaccinated for them would send a powerful message.

I Got Vaccinated for My Mom
Four pairs of Bronx mothers and sons volunteered to be portrayed in our vaccination ad campaign, ‘I Got Vaccinated for My Mom’ featured on bus tails and LINKNYC kiosks across the Bronx.
